Somer Stampley “Between Thorns”

Selva is pleased to present Between Thorns, the first solo exhibition of New York–based artist Somer Stampley.

For over a decade, Stampley’s practice has centered on collage and animation, primarily using cut-out paper to construct intricate, otherworldly scenes. Her work conjures alien landscapes populated by feminine entities and whimsical flora and fauna, rendered through a distinctly flat and vibrant color language.

Her films and collages have been exhibited internationally and commissioned by a range of musicians, from New York–based acts Hankwood and the Hammerheads to country icon Willie Nelson.

In Between Thorns, Stampley translates this visual vocabulary into painting. The works on canvas echo the compositional logic of her cut-paper constructions while introducing new material depth and spatial tension.

Across both mediums, Stampley builds narratives that unfold in expansive, imagined worlds while remaining attentive to the intimacy of natural detail
