Gabino Azuela “Plastic Fossils”

“Plastic Fossils” summons an archaeology of mass culture through the bootleg toy, one of its most unlikely relics. For Azuela, these toys are not disposable figurines or mere imitations, but talismans that echo the idols of our collective subconscious. They embody a secular mythology, mutating and deforming yet always preserving traces of the creatures that populate our shared imagination.

Painted on canvas, these spectral descendants of gods in plastic resist decay, transforming into relics of a cult of the disposable, where saints are cartoons, prayers are jingles, and miracles are the endless mutations of the same face. In Azuela’s work, the painted bootleg toy becomes more than a failed copy; it is a satire of reproduction, an iconoclastic practice that exposes the instability of originality and reality itself.”
